Well. Places like Chicago, New York, and LA are well-known for offering great sketch writing courses (Second City, UCB, Groundlings, et al.), but the odds are pretty good that you don't live in one of those three places. Which is fine - you can conceivably pursue your dream from any location on the planet. Nonetheless, it's my opinion that people pursuing creative avenues ought to start out in big cities. The reason is that:
Big cities = lots of people = lots of ideas = lots of competition = more stress = more effort = better work
All I'm saying is, it's not that hard to be the funniest guy in Waxhaw, North Carolina. I've been there.
Living in a big town gives you opportunities to see brilliant comedic victories and epic comic failures, sometimes on the same night in the same venue. It's a simultaneously inspiring, depressing, exhausting, and thrilling experience - and that's something you won't find every night in, say, Hoboken.
The other most important step is finding creative, reasonably like-minded individuals who are serious and on the same page you are. The easiest place someone interested in sketch comedy could find people like this would most likely be in a sketch comedy writing class or an improv class. Now, granted, the kids in POYKPAC were all friends before we ever started writing together, but getting a bunch of your funny friends together in a room with a camcorder and the intention to do some hi-larious collaborating often just ends in frustration. The people in that sketch class, on the other hand, have already demonstrated some things your friends may not have.
They've proven that they are:
-interested in comedy in a more than casual sense
-prepared to invest in that interest (in the way of both time & money)
-ready to listen and learn
The last point is probably the most important. The good news is, you're already there. Now, whether we're the right people to probe for career advice, that's a very different story. We're struggling day to day just like anyone else. But one thing I can tell you for sure - you're off on the right foot.
